The viewpoints at a glance

Fratta viewpoint from Silvaplana Explorer.

Fratta

After the Septimer Pass, the Julier Pass became the most important north-south crossing for the Romans. Emperor Augustus already hiked here through the Fratta Forest to the Po Valley in Italy. You can still find evidence of this time here today - such as the ruts in the cart wheels!

Ova dal Sagl

Did you know that a flood partially destroyed Surlej in 1793? In 1873, an 80 m long rock tunnel with a diameter of 3 m was built to guide the Ova da Surlej stream through an artificial tunnel to the waterfall. The waterfall is also called "Ova dal Tunnel" (meaning water of the tunnel) or "Ova da Surlej" (meaning water of Surlej).

Murtèl

After just two years of construction, the first section of the Corvatsch aerial cableway was opened in March 1963 and the second section in December. The sports mountain was finally accessible! Six previous attempts had failed. Today, around 1200 people per hour can be transported up the mountain.

Crap Alv

The first spring for the Surlej village well was built here in 1908. 21 years later, the "Crap Alv" reservoir was built with a capacity of 150 m3. Today, the Surlej water reservoir has a total capacity of 500 m3. 400 m3 of this is drinking water and 100 m3 fire-fighting water. "Crap Alv" means "white stone", as there are light-colored rocks here.

Crest'Alta viewpoint from Silvaplana Explorer.

Crest'Alta

A pretty restaurant with a panoramic terrace stood here until 1964. Built in 1888, the restaurant was leased out several times. However, there was no running water, so everything had to be laboriously carried up or lined along the forest path. When part of the building collapsed, it had to be demolished. Crest'Alta means "high ridge".

Chuchas

The Romans were already traveling over the Julier Pass in the 4th century. This was one of the most important connections for them. However, Silvaplana was not mentioned in documents until 1288 and Champfèr in 1139.
