Even before the February sun peeks over the snow-covered mountains, the young men in Champfèr and Silvaplana get to work. They get the sledges out of their hiding places and prepare them for their little journey. Once the sledge is attached to the horse, they slip into their tails and top hats and set off to meet their wives. The Schlitteda has been a tradition in the Upper Engadin for 200 years. In the past, the sleigh ride was the equivalent of an engagement; if a woman was invited, the man meant business. Today, such a liaison is not a prerequisite for participation. Nevertheless, the women still take the front seat, while the men stand behind them and hold the reins of the horse firmly in their hands as they drive the sleigh through the snow-covered winter landscape with the delicate tinkling of bells.
